Summer is here in Arizona and it's time to prepare for the hot days. So how do you keep your pooches entertained in the hot summer weather? In this article, I want to share my favorite summer items with you. They make the hot days fun and help exercise your dog, so he doesn't develop any unwanted behaviors. We take our dogs out to the lakes or on creek hikes. 1. Doggie Float I am going to start with one of my favorite items, the doggie float. If you have a pool in your backyard or take your dog out to the lake, this is a must-have! The one in the picture above is the Swimways Paddle Paws Dog Float . The small one is rated for dogs up to 65 lbs and the big one is for dogs 65 lbs and over. This dog float features a paw-and-claw-friendly fabric covering and puncture resistant construction ensuring it won't pop on the first pool day. It's available on Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart. Another great way to enjoy the pool or the lake is the Paws Aboard Float. It comes in three sizes and is shaped like a paw. It too is made out of paw and claw safe materials and they even have a guarantee it wont rip. It's a fun item for the pool, but it is flat and without a rim, so your dog has to be used to it to feel comfortable standing on this in the water. It's like a doggie paddle board. Heidi loves it! 2. Doggie Life Jacket If you going to take your dog out on the lake or on the ocean, a doggie life jacket is a must-have. Even when your dog is a good swimmer, like our Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Jaeger, having a life jacket onboard is a good idea. Just like the humans, we hope we won't need it, but in an emergency, a life jacket is life-saving equipment. Here a a few great examples of doggie life savers: SwimWays Sea Squirt for small dogs EzyDog Premium Floating device comes in 5 sizes to fit any size dog Like a winter coat, the dog gets used to wearing it and our dogs even trust it enough to float in the water, when they get tired of paddling with their feet. 3. Doggie Boots So I know I talk about these a lot in my blog, but I believe if you own a dog in Phoenix Arizona, Dog Boots are a must-have. The pavement gets too hot to walk on even for just a little bit, so even when your dogs don't go out during the summer time unless you absolutely have to, like going to the vet, you should invest in dog boots. For one, they are pretty inexpensive now, and if you are still not convinced your dog needs them, go out barefooted yourself when you take the dog and see how your feet feel.............. Here is my recommendation for inexpensive good fitting booties for the pouches: HiPaw Summer Breathable Dog Boots Your want to look for something that has breathable top materials and a rubber sole. Don't use anything that is waterproof, because it won't be breathable. One thing many dog owners don't know is that dogs sweat through their paws as well as through their tongue, so if you use waterproof materials, the dog's paws will get overheated. Check out my video regarding choosing dog boots and also how to train your dog to use them. If you just put them on your dog, he is likely to chew them up and you don't want that! |
